Executive Director, BOSASA Group
“Mathenjwa regards the highlight of his career as the satisfaction of finding a person with no education, training them and then placing them in a job. ‘I am pleased to have helped restore the human dignity of many people. I also strongly believe that learning and self-development never end for an individual.'”
As Executive Director of BOSASA Group and Sondolo Integrated Technology (IT), Trevor Mathenjwa uses his long experience of mentoring, development and management to lead a team of professional technicians.
Mathenjwa developed Sondolo IT from scratch: “We started with almost nothing. The objective was to establish a large-scale control room operation. First we had to identify the right candidates for this new BOSASA business unit. We had only one room where all the equipment was stored. With just one vehicle we travelled to different regions to test and train potential Sondolo IT employees.”
Now Sondolo IT has specialist teams of highly trained technicians nationwide. They undertake IT and security installations and also maintain the systems and equipment for clients with extensive operations.
Mathenjwa obtained his Bachelor of Social Science and Honours in Developmental Studies degrees at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Always concerned with social justice and the issues ordinary people face, he was instrumental in getting the university to change its admission requirements for disadvantaged students.
Having been a teacher and headmaster, he became a community facilitator doing social development work. The experience he gained here in feasibility planning, project management and accommodating various stakeholders equipped Mathenjwa for the responsibilities of launching a new business unit.
Throughout Mathenjwa’s varied work experience he has honed his special skill of assessing people’s character and potential to succeed at something for which they may not yet have the necessary training or qualifications. “I could look at the issue of development in a very holistic way. Once a person was given the opportunity to succeed, develop new skills and grow as an individual, their character changed significantly for the better,” he observes.
Mathenjwa regards the highlight of his career as the satisfaction of finding a person with no education, training them and then placing them in a job. “I am pleased to have helped restore the human dignity of many people. I also strongly believe that learning and self-development never end for an individual.”
With these values Mathenjwa is building a base of strong future leaders who will ensure the growth of Sondolo IT and BOSASA. He believes that leadership is servanthood. “Any leader who is not prepared to serve is not a leader. Look at Jesus Christ. He is a perfect example of leadership,” says Mathenjwa.
